Sunshine Diving Dogs in Bridgeton, New Jersey, prides itself on creating opportunities to build the future of dock diving. Run by Sunny Weldy and her husband Arthur, with help from their granddaughter Hunter Medina, the facility offers daily lessons and rentals in its two pools, as well as boarding, training and day care options for a variety of clients.
“Our objective here at Sunshine is a year-round plan of action,” Hunter said. “Upgrading our facility to have two pools was probably one of our best decisions. It allows us to offer more lessons and rentals with new athletes constantly coming out to try the sport. It also allows us to rent out the second pool during competitions so competitors can warm up and have more fun with their dogs.”
Sunny is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer who has competed with AKC since she was 17. She is also a breeder of merit for Labrador Retrievers, focusing on their athleticism and demeanor. With a master’s degree in animal science and behavior, Sunny also often draws on her wealth of knowledge as a former nationally-ranked track coach to draw the best out of every athlete.
Along with his role as a facility operator, Arthur is also a NADD judge and has been a major part of the diving community for years. His investments into Sunshine Diving Dogs have turned the facility into a true athletic showcase, and Sunny is grateful to have shared this journey with him every step of the way.
“We live in a remote area, but we never want customers who travel a long distance to suffer for that,” said Hunter, who has helped her grandparents with the facility for the last six years. “We always provide some type of meal at events – sometimes elaborate things, sometimes just hoagies or pizza. Nobody wants to drive 20 minutes away just for a sandwich! And we love our customer service here at Sunshine. The best part for the staff working here is getting to watch a dog make its first jump; it takes our breath away!”
